66/Regular/Full-Time The incumbent will assist the Big Game Biologist III with all aspects of big game management on the Yakama Reservation and Treaty territory.
The Big Game species addressed include deer, elk, mountain goats, wolves, black bears, cougars, pronghorn antelope, big horn sheep, horses, and bison.
The incumbent will work with the lead biologist on the Bison Program and Big Game program according to the Mission Statement and management goals and objectives of the Yakama Nation Wildlife Resource Management Program.
Incumbent will attend necessary local, state, and national meetings as well as Green Energy Development Project meetings within Yakama Nation Treaty territory.
Examples of Work Performed:
Will assist the Big Game Biologist III with off-reservation representation by participating in meetings with state, federal, and Tribes.
To collaborate with outside agencies to co-manage big game species on and off the Yakama Reservation.
Participate in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings (IDT).
Participate in timber sale scoping field trips to determine impacts on big game species.
Monitor logging units for deer and elk impacts and provide technical recommendations to reduce those impacts.
Participate in providing technical recommendations on mitigation measures to energy developers in Treaty territory to reduce potential impacts and for big game species.
Assist lead biologist in seeking funds and writing grants.
Communicate effectively and periodically with the supervisor and program manager on work progress.
Navigate to remote field locations by vehicle and on foot to set up survey equipment or detect species (plant and animal).
Locate survey points using GPS enabled tablets, handheld devices or topographic maps and establish permanent survey points.
Conduct vegetation surveys (plant species identification, using taxonomic keys), habitat and species-specific surveys as required for pasture management.
Prepares activities and financial reports as needed on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Knowledge of the National Indian Forest Resources Management Act (NIFRMA).
Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
Knowledge of the Clean Water Act (CWA).
Knowledge of Yakama Nation Law & Order Code and Title 32 Wildlife Code 111.
Knowledge of the Yakama Nation Treaty of 1855.
Knowledge of East Cascades/Columbia Basin plants, habitats, and animal species.
Knowledge of Wilderness Act, Wild Horse Protection Act of 1959, Sustained Yield Forest Management Act, Forest, and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act.
Knowledge of ArcGIS Pro software and Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint software and other statistical data management software.
Knowledge of principles of wildlife biology and management including scientific research and design, statistical analysis, and technical writing.
Knowledge of life history, biology, and habitat requirements of wildlife species.
Knowledge and demonstrated ability in operating and maintaining:
GPS and VHF radio collars and radio-tracking equipment.
Skills in digital camera, GPS unit and hand-held data devices to collect habitat and vegetation data.
Ability to conduct a variety of habitat or species-specific surveys.
Ability to identify plants and animal species (using taxonomy).
Ability to use topographic maps to navigate to remote sites.
Ability to manage implementation of several work projects, simultaneously.
Ability to work well with a broad diversity of people and personalities that include Tribal staff, the general public and staff from adjacent land management agencies.
Ability to learn and complete complex animal, habitat, or vegetation sampling techniques.
Ability to drive a 4wd vehicle in rugged terrain.
Ability to work long hours and walk long distances in rugged terrain in inclement weather conditions.
Ability to work well in a team.
Ability to uphold the Personnel policies of the Yakama Nation.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain accurate records and data pertinent to field surveys.
Participate in team building and complete other duties as assigned in a timely manner.
Minimum Requirements:
Must have a bachelor's degree in Natural Resources or Related fields.
Incumbent may be required to work flexible hours and some travel.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
