Compliance Specialist

Job Description:
The Compliance Specialist must at all times safeguard and protect the patient's rights to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient's medical information and that all release of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy and HIPAA statues.
Additionally, the Compliance Specialist is required to maintain a professional health care office environment on a day-to-day basis, working with confidential and personal health information in a conscientious manner and providing patients and other requestors with the appropriate level of service.
This position engages in direct customer service and must perform duties and conduct interpersonal relationships in a manner designed to project a positive image of the department and YVFWC.
In addition, the Compliance Specialist performs various duties in furtherance of the organization's establishment and maintenance of an effective compliance program consistent with state and federal statutes, rules and regulations, including but not limited to HIPAA regulation, release of patient records, compliance investigations, monitoring and auditing, as determined by the General Counsel and the Compliance and HIPAA Privacy Administrator.
This position requires independent knowledge, judgment and application of federal and state laws, rules and regulations as well as YVFWC policies and procedures.
Further, this position can be stressful.
The Compliance Specialist must accept the responsibility that a mistake could subject YVFWC to millions of dollars in fines and a dramatic loss of reputation.
Qualifications: Education: High School Diploma/GED.
Courses in medical terminology, health records and healthcare compliance including HIPAA required.
2 years of healthcare compliance experience or other relevant experience may be substituted.

Healthcare compliance experience preferred.
Licenses/Certificates/Registration: None.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Strong working knowledge of healthcare compliance associated matters including but not limited to medical records preservation and release practices, policies and procedures including HIPAA, investigations, monitoring and auditing.
Strong analytical skills are necessary.
Strong working knowledge of HIPAA, Oregon and Washington privacy laws, medical records laws, and their exceptions.
Ability to use informed judgment in applying federal and state statutes, rules and regulations, many of which carry criminal penalties, to wide variety of fact patterns.
Ability to undertake and manage internal investigations with little supervision.
Ability to conduct fact finding interviews.
Ability to work closely with payors to audit releases and patient files.
Must have a knowledge of medical records and must be well trained in medical terminology.
Basic knowledge of computers.
Ability to handle very stressful situations.
Skill in providing excellent customer service.
Skill in establishing and maintaining independent effective working relationships with internal and clinic staff.
Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and decision making.
Ability to prioritize required jobs and maintain focus to get them done.
Must be comfortable using a computer to perform tasks such as scanning, indexing, and editing medical records.
Ability to perform team-oriented job tasks with a conscientious awareness of detail and accuracy.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
